Employers should conduct training so that employ- ees understand the risks and rewards of social networking and how the social networking policy affects them. Training topics include the following: • Educating employees about social networking, including the very public (and often un-retractable) nature of online communications • Conveying expectations regarding respectful and professional communications online by employees who are associated with the employer in their online presence • Explaining the specific provisions of the social networking policy and how it affects (or is affected) by other employer policies in place • For supervisors and managers, addressing the issues that can arise when they interact with their subordinates online (such as being “friends” on Facebook) Social networking is evolving but likely to be a common form of communication for the foreseeable future. Given this reality, proactively developing a social networking policy is prudent risk management.
